My Writing
When I joined North Pointe last year, I had to learn how to write in a more journalistic style. Although it wasn't the easiest thing to figure out, I was able to be promoted form Intern to staff reporter, and staff reporter to section editor. Now as a writer I have worked on a myriad of stories ranging from opinion pieces, sports pieces, and news pieces. This year as an editor, I am also able to do first reads for the stories going into our paper. I have enjoyed the opportunities North Pointe has given me to cover important topics all around my school and the world. Though journalism was never something I was initially interested in, after participating in it, I am dreading leaving this program.

Editorial
For my last and final North Pointe piece, I thought it would only be appropriate to reflect on the academic journey that brought me to where I am today. My Editor-in-chief had asked me to write the senior editorial, and I knew I wanted to do something unique. In seventh grade, my English teacher had us write a letter to our graduated selves. I unfortunately didn't have the letter, and I didn't know when it would be sent out, so I had to knock on his door and ask for it. As I had a conversation with my former teacher, I was reminded of the nostalgia of middle school. Though I think I'm much different from 12-year-old me, she was the person that fell in love with literature, and made me the journalist that I am today.

Life
Getting ahold of someone who lives across the world from you isn't easy, but luckily I was able to for our March issue. As our current German Club will be traveling to Germany this summer, I decided that an insightful expert source would be a Grosse Pointe North alumni who now is a part of an exchange program in Germany. Going into the story I didn't know much about Germany, but through this story, I learned about what it's like to live there and the journey that our current German Club will be undergoing.

Editorial Board

For our December issue, I volunteered to write the Editorial board piece. This was my first time writing for the edboard, and I was really excited to write an opinion piece that we could all side for. Following the recent resignation of our superintendent, as well as budget cuts our district faced last year, students were experiencing numerous inconsistencies with our staff. With this piece, I was able to cover clubs, and classes that got cut, as well as do research on average student and staff ratios. I'm proud of how this piece turned out, and believe it is a super relevant topic that needed to be covered.

Album Review
As a music lover, I immediately jumped on this review. Although I hadn't listen to much Rolling Stones prior to this story, I was super excited to hear their new music. This album shocked me, and wouldn't have been something I would've listened to if it wasn't for North Pointe. I was able to expand my knowledge on classic rock, and hear some truly incredible songs that opened my eyes to a new perspective of rock. I haven't heard many songs from this album go mainstream, but I hope the people that read this review gave it a deserved listen.

News
This news story was a part of our first issue released in the 2023-2024 school year. Mentors and mentees worked together during this issue, so I was able to really get to know some of the interns in my class. During this issue I had gotten covid, and was unable to work side by side with my mentees. This created some upsets because I couldn't give them the guidence they needed in a timely manner. Despite this, we were able to get some really good interviews, as well as write a really insightful story.

My Turn
During our March break, we were tasked with learning a new skill and writing an editorial about it. When we came back from break, the class individually voted for the best piece. I wrote about learning Italian through Duolingo to strengthen my connection with my mom's family. My piece won the contest, and was published to our website. I really enjoyed writing this, and was able to have a really heartfelt conversation with my Nonna.

For our February issue, I was a part of a story that covered local sustainability. After a contractor came to our school to speak about sustainable living, we decided he would be a resourceful interviewee. Unfortunately, it was really hard to get in contact with him, causing my interview with him to happen at 10 o'clock at night the day before we were sending our pages. Despite our upsets, my partners and I wrote a really useful story that got us a third place MIPA award.

This was the second story I had ever worked on, and it was with two people I didn't really know. However, we all were able to meet up at the library to get a tour of the new updates, and get a really insightful interview. This story really showed me what being a journalist was. Taking notes, pictures, and then writing about it to share with the people of Grosse Pointe. I was really proud of how this story turned out, and we got a first place MIPA award for it.
